United Nations Sustainable Development Goals are a global agenda towards more sustainable future for the planet, its nature and the people. The Hanhikivi 1 project contributes positively to achieving several of the goals.
7 Affordable and clean energy, 9 Industry, innovation and infrastructure, and 13 Climate action
Hanhikivi 1 contributes to combatting the climate change. The Hanhikivi 1 nuclear power plant will generate approximately 10 percent of Finland’s electricity need without harmful carbon dioxide emissions.
The new electricity production infrastructure will improve Finland’s energy self-sufficiency by reducing dependency on electricity import. In recent years, some 20 percent of Finland’s electricity needs have been supplied through imports.
Our Finnish owners consume a large share of all the electricity consumed in Finland. The new nuclear power plant will provide them electricity they need to succeed in Finland and at the same time, it supports the sustainable development of the Finnish society.
8 Decent work and economic growth
The positive economic impact of the Hanhikivi 1 project is extensive. Hanhikivi 1 is an investment of between EUR 7 billion and EUR 7.5 billion, of which domestic investment accounts for about EUR 1.8 to 2.7 billion. Investments improve employment, create new business and result in increased tax revenues. The impact extends to the entire Finnish economy.
We bear responsibility that all the companies active at the site comply with Finnish labor legislation and respect labor and human rights in their operations and that the working environment is safe and secure for all workers.
12 Responsible consumption, 14 Life below Water, and 15 Life on Land
The environmental footprint of the entire life cycle of nuclear energy production is small. Our direct environmental impacts are mostly related to construction site work, and the thermal effects of reactor cooling water and fuel production during operation. As a carbon-free form of electricity generation, the climate impact of nuclear power is small corresponding to the climate effects of wind, solar and hydropower.
The environmental impact management of Hanhikivi 1 is based on proactive identification of environmental risks. We make sure that the site complies with environmental legislation and permit conditions and that construction work is carried out in a manner that respects the well-being of the environment and the people living in the surrounding area. Efficient sorting and recycling as well as appropriate processing are important parts of managing the environmental impact of the waste generated at the site.
