Support for the Hanhikivi 1 project continues to be strong
The project has strong support in Pyhäjoki and the surrounding area. According to the survey, 74.2 percent of Pyhäjoki residents support the project. In the entire study area, 69.1 percent of the residents are positive about the construction of the power plant.
A recently completed study shows that 74.2 percent of Pyhäjoki residents support the construction of the Hanhikivi 1 power plant. The majority of local residents have had a positive view about the project since its inception. Over the past three years, support has been over 70 percent.
Even though this year has been very different with the Covid-19 pandemic, support has remained at a good level in the surrounding municipalities as well. In total, 69.1 percent of the residents of Pyhäjoki and its neighboring municipalities Kalajoki, Merijärvi, Oulainen and Raahe support the project.
In Pyhäjoki, the readings have decreased by 2.3 percentage points from the previous year, when the local support for Hanhikivi 1 project reached an all-time high: 76.5 percent of the residents of Pyhäjoki welcomed the power plant project.
Across the study area, the support for the project has fallen by two percentage points from the previous year's peak reading, which was 71.1 percent. At the same time, the number of people with a neutral attitude has increased both in Pyhäjoki and the surrounding area. In Pyhäjoki, the change has been 1.3, and among all respondents 3.2 percentage points. Across the study area, the number of those who have a negative attitude towards the project has decreased by 1.1 percentage points.
Norstat Finland interviewed a total of 850 randomly selected people by phone during October-November: 400 in Pyhäjoki and 450 in the nearby areas. The margin of error is ±3.3 percentage points. Fennovoima has commissioned the local opinion survey from Norstat Finland since 2008.
