Lessons learned from inspections – part 2

We closely monitor the production and quality of the components of the Hanhikivi 1 nuclear power plant. Due to the corona pandemic, we use local companies specializing in the task to help with quality control.

Hanhikivi 1 project has taken the first steps of main component manufacturing. However, if you have read my article in Fennovoima’s Year 2020 report (p. 35), you already know that the beginning was not always easy from the quality inspections point of view.

Mainly, we had some challenges in our inspections with the turbine rotor forging in Japan due to COVID-19 traveling restrictions. We had to hire a local company to conduct the inspections, and the language barrier and cultural differences caused us some gray hairs. At the same time, the situation gave us a perspective of what to improve in our operations to ensure a smooth proceeding of inspections. Lessons learned from Japan have now been integrated into our quality control (QC) management system to avoid similar problems in the future.

A new big step in manufacturing was taken this summer when manufacturing the first permanent structures of the Hanhikivi 1 nuclear power plant began in Estonia. The concreting works of the caissons will be concluded in autumn. Those will then be transferred to the Hanhikivi 1 site by the end of this year. 

The COVID-19 situation is still affecting our inspection work as traveling to Estonia has been very limited. Again, we had to hire a local inspection company specialized in the scope of the inspections and supervision activities. Following the lessons learned from Japan, we have improved our QC processes, including the induction training and support for the local inspectors.

Due to our efforts, we have seen a considerable improvement and the inspection work of the first permanent structures proceeds now fluently. In addition, of course, the fact that the Estonian inspectors and we have a similar working culture and understanding of the European standards and quality requirements makes the work more manageable.

Our quality control team is highly proactive, and we have put a lot of effort into improving our way of working and clarifying our internal responsibilities and communication. In addition, we are continuously developing our capabilities and harmonizing our understanding of the standards and requirements through training.

Our quality control team will grow heavily over the following years. The multicultural background of our team members has an impact on our working culture. We are from seven different nationalities, and the cultural backgrounds spice up the conversation and widen the perspective.

Even though we have complex matters to develop and problems to solve, we also laugh a lot at work. Every Friday, most of the team gathers to a site coordination meeting. In addition to work issues, we also discuss personal matters, such as our kids, summer cottage renovations, or whatever anyone wants to talk about. After a tough work week, it is an excellent way to release stress and pressure and feel connected with the teammates.

Julien Henry started his career at Fennovoima in 2018. In May this year, he was appointed to the position of Quality Control Inspection Manager. Julien has a technical vocational education background in industrial piping system and before moving to Finland to work in the Olkiluoto 3 project and Areva, he worked for around 10 years in the conventional and nuclear submarines construction as well as in the Nuclear industry in France. Julien is a sports lover and practices his physics several times a week at the gym or doing other sports. Most of his free time goes with his family including his 1-year old son.
